Here at IMeasureU (IMU), having developed inertial sensors and a software platform that precisely quantifies body movement and workload metrics of professional athletes, we are now looking to expand our understanding of the lower limbs to create solutions that positively impacts people’s lives. Having joined forces with Vicon, the world leader in precision motion capture, working at IMU means you will develop an intimate knowledge of inertial sensors, motion capture and tracking systems from our office in Kingsland, Auckland.

Your main role will be using your understanding of human physiology and biomechanics to investigate, develop and validate new algorithms and metrics using IMUs. Working with customers and stakeholders, you will help identify opportunities to leverage our data to improve customer experiences and gain new insights that will help a wide range of people around the world.

Main responsibilities

Using your in-depth knowledge of biomechanics to help design, implement and validate scalable algorithms that provide insights into human motion

Work on internal studies and with external research partners to create and facilitate protocols during various stages of rehabilitation or pre- and post-operative care

Validating outputs using different motion capture and imaging technologies

Investigate and keep abreast of new research methodologies within academia and incorporate into our research and prototype pipeline

Incorporate relevant developments in signal processing, machine learning and other computational fields during the development of algorithms, metrics, and insights

Collaborate with design, development, and engineering teams both locally and globally

Contribute to all aspects of the software development lifecycle including develop, test, and deploy new functionality

Create and collaborate on internal and external facing technical documentation, reports, and white papers

Key requirements

At least 3 years’ commercial experience or at least 1 year post doc experience in biomechanics

Proven and demonstrable experience in Python, MATLAB, R or other computational languages

Effective communication and documentation skills

The ability to manipulate data and draw insights from large datasets

Understanding of human physiology, biomechanics, and anatomy

Bonus points for knowledge in

Use of Inertial Measurement Units and/or Optical Motion Capture

Gait Analysis

Using EMG, force plates, GPS or other sensing technologies

Machine learning techniques (clustering, decision tree learning, neural networks etc.)

Use of OpenSim or other biomechanical modelling, simulation, and analysis tools

AWS, Azure, Google or other cloud providers

The ability to communicate effectively with both verbally and written, including fluency in written and spoken English

Degree and experience

PhD or post graduate degree(s) in Biomechanics, Biomedical engineering, Applied Science, Sports Science, Health, Mathematics, or related quantitative field, or undergraduate degree with 3+ years of commercial experience.
