Algorithms Engineer & Biomechanist

By May 19, 2023 Auckland, Careers

Job Description

Are you a biomechanist, bioengineer or applied mathematician who wants to help us translate human movement into insights that improves people’s lives? Come join an innovative New Zealand company that is part of Vicon, the world leaders in precision motion capture and tracking systems.

Here at IMeasureU (IMU), having developed inertial sensors and a software platform that precisely quantifies body movement and workload metrics of professional athletes, we are looking to expand our understanding of human movement to create new solutions that help and support people during rehabilitation and in their daily lives. Working at IMU means you will develop an intimate knowledge of inertial sensors, motion capture and tracking systems from our office in Kingsland, Auckland.

In this role you will be part of a collaborative team that develops new algorithms, models and metrics using IMU data. Your understanding of human physiology and biomechanics along with your programming & modelling skills will enable you to be involved in all aspects of the development process, from research and prototyping to validation and production. Working with customers and stakeholders, you will help identify opportunities to leverage our data to improve customer experiences and gain new insights that will help a wide range of people around the world.

Responsibilities

o Using your in-depth knowledge of biomechanics, algorirthms and data science, you will help design, implement and validate scalable solutions that provide insights into human movement.
o Work on internal studies and with external research partners to create and facilitate protocols during various stages of rehabilitation, pre- and post-operative care and performance.
o Validating outputs using different motion capture and imaging technologies.
o Investigate and keep abreast of new research methodologies within academia.
o Incorporate relevant developments in signal processing, machine learning and other computational fields during the development of algorithms, metrics, and insights.
o Collaborate with design, development, and engineering teams both locally and globally.
o Contribute to all aspects of the software development lifecycle including develop, test, and deploy new functionality.
o Create and collaborate on internal and external facing technical documentation, reports, and white papers.

Qualifications

o PhD in Bioengineering (biomechanics/biomedical), Engineering Science, Applied Mathematics, Sports Science, Machine Learning/Data Science or related quantitative field, or other post graduate degree with 2+ years of commercial experience.

Competencies

o An inquisitive mind with strong exploratory skills
o A highly motivated individual with the ability to lead work and shape work culture
o Strong interpersonal skills, organisational and time management skills

o Proven and demonstrable experience in Python, C++, Matlab, R or other computational languages

o Effective communication and documentation skills

o The ability to organise, visualise, manipulate and draw insights from large datasets

o Understanding of human physiology, biomechanics and anatomy

o Time-series algorithms, predictive models, and signal processing using both conventional and deep learning techniques.

o Demonstrated research abilities through peer reviewed publications and/or conference papers in biomechanics or related field.

Bonus points for knowledge in:

o Use of Inertial Measurement Units and/or Optical Motion Capture

o Gait Analysis

o Using EMG, force plates, GPS or other sensing technologies

o Machine learning techniques (classification, clustering, decision tree learning, neural networks etc.)

o Use of OpenSim or other biomechanical modelling, simulation, and analysis tools.
